David started where most of the best Superintendents start, on the tools. He came up through The Metropolitan Golf Club, moving from apprentice to Assistant Superintendent over seven years on one of the country's finest courses. From there he led the turf at Warrnambool, Riversdale, then back to The Metropolitan Golf Club as Superintendent, then Brisbane Golf Club, taking on the responsibility for surfaces that members and tournament organisers judged by the highest standard.
That standard was not abstract. David prepared courses for Australian Opens, the World Cup of Golf and Presidents Cups, the events where a surface has nowhere to hide. He earned a Royal and Ancient Golf and Greenkeeping Scholarship along the way, the kind of recognition that comes from peers rather than marketing.
Thirty-two years taught him one thing above all: great turf is the result of measurement and accountability, not guesswork and good intentions.
Over those decades David watched a problem grow that the industry still has not solved. Clubs and councils cannot find or afford the senior turf talent they need. Skilled greenkeepers have been in short supply for more than a decade, and a full-time Superintendent now costs well over a hundred thousand dollars a year, loaded. Smaller clubs, regional courses, bowling greens and council grounds are left to manage some of their most valuable assets without expert oversight.
